HISTORY
Yakov was born in the densely populated city of Novosibirsk in 1976. When he was fifteen his parents took out a loan and planned to move to California in the United States of America, wanting the best for him and his older sister Alina. They traveled by air along with their cousins, who were also immigrating to the US. Emotionally the move was troubling for him. He left his friends and all that was familiar to him behind, but he held tight to the idea that things would be better in the new country. Entering the American school system was troubling for him for language barrier reasons, although he had been urged to learn simple English years ago. He studied further and caught on well, but not fast enough to avoid the blunt of a bad social image. Because of this, he persisted asking his father to let him transfer to a different high school until he finally got the fresh start he craved.
His parents and his cousins parents run a small convenience store as a family business, where they sell exported candies and supplies from Russia. He works part-time there. They live in a large apartment complex near a park in a less expensive area of town. There are a few other Eastern European families and he more or less is comfortable now. Everything is new here. He can't lie that he gets homesick from time to time.
